Whilst 98 per cent of Europeans surveyed consider it essential to protect marine life, the danger posed by underwater noise remains unseen: <strong>only 14 per cent of respondents spontaneously identify it as a threat<\/strong>. <\/p><p>However, the noise generated by commercial ships causes deadly disruptions for many species (cetaceans, fish, invertebrates) that rely on sound to navigate, feed, and communicate.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-c1d675d e-flex e-con-boxed e-con e-parent\" data-id=\"c1d675d\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-con-inner\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-d846957 elementor-widget__width-inherit elementor-widget-mobile__width-inherit elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"d846957\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<h3>A realization that calls for action<\/h3><p>However, once people learn about the devastating impact of this noise pollution on ocean wildlife, public opinion shifts dramatically. The results in France are particularly telling: <\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-9809ec9 e-con-full e-flex e-con e-child\" data-id=\"9809ec9\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-903928c elementor-widget__width-initial elementor-widget elementor-widget-counter\" data-id=\"903928c\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"counter.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-counter\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-counter-title\">Many French people believe that the problem of marine noise pollution must be addressed urgently.<\/div>\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-counter-number-wrapper\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"elementor-counter-number-prefix\"><\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"elementor-counter-number\" data-duration=\"2000\" data-to-value=\"89\" data-from-value=\"0\">0<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"elementor-counter-number-suffix\">%<\/span>\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-c260ad6 elementor-widget__width-initial elementor-widget elementor-widget-counter\" data-id=\"c260ad6\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" juncture. The European Union is currently working on revising the Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD) and preparing to draft the future European Legislative Act for the Ocean, which is widely expected to be adopted in 2026. <\/p><p>With the support of KRESK 4 OCEANS, IFAW is building on this public mandate to call on European authorities to take action. It is imperative that these regulations include a mandatory reduction in the speed of commercial vessels.
