Recycle and Upcycle

Kresk 4 Oceans supports "Repêchons les océans" and more specifically the port and fishermen of Concarneau. This is a programme to recover marine waste in collaboration with the fishing industry in France, run by the Ecoalf Foundation in partnership with the Fondation de la Mer.

The program brings together and supports the fishing and upcycling industries in France, promoting their development at local level. This initiative is made possible thanks to the work carried out by fishermen on a daily basis, but also thanks to the support of port managers and local organisations.

Since 2022, 10 ports: Le Grau d'Agde, Saint-Quay-Portrieux, Erquy, Saint-Cast-Le-Guildo, Dieppe, Lorient, Boulogne-sur-Mer, Concarneau, Douarnenez and Saint-Guénolé have joined the programme network.

They form a fleet of around 394 boats and 790 fishermen. They join a network of 71 European ports in Spain, Greece and Italy taking part in this project, which began in 2015 in the Mediterranean. Thanks to their help, 1,413 tonnes of waste have been removed from the sea since 2015.
 

Some keys figures

The objectives of the program are to set up a network of fishing professionals, to protect marine life by removing marine waste that damages ecosystems and to promote the circular economy through the implementation of an effective national marine waste management system. Another objective is to maintain traceability. The characterisation of marine litter is fed back via CEDRE and the Ministry for Ecological Transition. This information on the categorisation of the marine waste collected is used to raise public awareness of plastic pollution in the ocean.

This program is part of the Kresk 4 Oceans "Agir à terre - Upcycling" initiative to fight plastic pollution at sea, and is based on the international "Upcycling The Ocean" initiative run by the Ecoalf Foundation and the Fondation de la Mer.
